Sayer dates and where they come from
Sayer, also traded as Stamaran, is an Iranian date grown mainly in Khuzestan province in the south-west of the country, in the river country around Abadan and Khorramshahr. Compare grade with grade, kilo with kilo
Most sellers grade their dates, commonly A, AA and AAA, and the same variety can be priced quite differently from one grade to the next. Pack size matters as well. A 1kg retail box and a 10kg wholesale carton are priced differently per kilo, so divide each quote down to a price per kilo before you decide which one is cheaper.
A cheap AAA quote set against an expensive A quote tells you nothing. Ask both suppliers for the same grade in the same pack size, then compare. The dates in the Malaysian market are often sold under loose names too. Sayer and Stamaran are the same date, but a box marked only "Iranian dates" could hold any of several varieties, and you cannot compare a price until you know which one it is.
What the label should tell you
Before you pay, check the carton or pack for five things: the variety name, the country of origin (Iran, for Sayer), the packing or expiry date, the net weight, and the importer's name. A box with none of that is hard to hold against a competing offer, and you have nothing to go back to if the stock is not what you ordered.

Demand for every kind of kurma in Malaysia climbs in the weeks before Ramadan, and Ramadan comes round about 11 days earlier each year, so the busy season keeps moving. The supply of dates reaching Malaysia depends on each year's harvest and on the cost of importing, which shifts with the ringgit. Shops that order before the rush usually get more choice of grade and pack size than those ordering in the last fortnight.
Storing Sayer once it arrives
Keep opened dates in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, or in the fridge if you will not finish them within a few weeks. Reseal a carton after every use so the fruit neither dries out nor picks up damp from the air.
