Discovering the Best Dates Wholesaler in Malaysia

dates wholesaler Malaysia

Search for "dates wholesaler Malaysia" and most of the results look the same: a few photos, a list of varieties and a WhatsApp number. The gap between a good wholesaler and an average one tends to show up in something small. Does the name on the price list match what is inside the carton?

Every date sold in Malaysia is imported. There is no commercial date-growing trade here, so each carton has crossed at least one border and often passed through more than one pair of hands before it reaches you. On the way, the same fruit can pick up different names. That naming problem is the fairest way to compare wholesalers, so it is where this guide starts.

One date, several trade names

These are names you will meet on Malaysian price lists, and what they actually refer to:

  • Sayer is an Iranian date from Khuzestan, amber-brown and semi-dry. It is also traded as Stamaran. It is not Shahani, which is a separate variety.
  • "Kurma Nabi" is a market name for Ajwa, the small, near-black, soft date from Madinah.
  • "Kurma tangkai" usually means Deglet Noor sold on the stem. Deglet Noor comes from Tunisia and Algeria, and the stem says nothing about Madinah.
  • "Kurma madu" and "Rotab Mazafati Bam" both mean Mazafati, the dark, very soft date from Bam in Kerman province, Iran.

So one seller writing "Stamaran" and another writing "Sayer" may be quoting the same fruit. A seller who writes only "kurma Iran" could mean Sayer, Mariami, Piarom or Mazafati, and those are quite different to eat and to keep. You cannot compare two price lists until you know which variety sits on each line.

Semi-dry amber-brown Sayer dates

What a useful price list shows

The wholesalers worth keeping put three things on every line: the variety, the country it was grown in, and the net weight per carton or pack. With those you can work out a price per kilo and compare sellers properly. Our wholesale date pricing guide shows how a list like that is usually laid out, and the older price post covers a diverse selection of date varieties if you want to see more lines side by side.

Watch the grade labels. A, AA, AAA and Jumbo are each importer's own size sorting, not an international standard. A "Jumbo" Sayer from one supplier is not promised to match a "Jumbo" Sayer from another, so a grade on its own tells you little until you have seen the fruit.

Four questions that test the labels

  1. Which variety is this, and where was it grown? If the answer is "kurma Iran" or "kurma Arab", ask again.
  2. Is this from the same importer as my last order? A change of importer can change the size sorting and the packing even when the variety name stays the same.
  3. Can I see a sample from the batch you will actually ship, not a photo from last season?
  4. Is it a soft rutab date or a drier tamr date, and how has it been kept since it landed? Soft Mazafati is cold-stored and sold all year, which is normal. Semi-dry Sayer, Mariami or Deglet Noor are different stock and should be described as such.

A wholesaler who answers all four in one message, without being chased, is usually the one who will also tell you when something changes.

Large soft Medjool dates

Bulk orders and the busy months

Demand peaks before and during Ramadan, and again around Hari Raya, wedding hantaran, kenduri and umrah gifts. Most Gulf and Middle-East dates are harvested from late summer into autumn, and new-season stock reaches Malaysia some weeks after that. If you need a large supply of dates for the fasting month, agree the variety and origin in writing well before the rush.

The rush is when quiet substitutions happen. One line runs short and a similar-looking date goes into the carton instead. Sayer and Mariami, for example, are both semi-dry Iranian dates, and on a busy day one can end up in a carton where the other was ordered. A good wholesaler tells you before swapping. A poor one lets you find out when you open the box.

A quick way to shortlist

Ask two or three wholesalers for their current list. Pick the same two lines from each, say a Sayer and a Deglet Noor, and ask what each trade name means and where the fruit was grown. Then place a small trial order with the one whose answers were clearest.
