Sayer: the variety suppliers rarely put on the label
Ask most dates suppliers in Malaysia what's in a mixed carton and Sayer often isn't named, even when it's a large share of what's inside. It's an Iranian semi-dry variety from the Bam and Kerman region, firmer and less sweet than Mazafati, and priced well below Ajwa or Medjool — which is exactly why it turns up in blended boxes without its own line on the label.
Why it gets blended rather than sold on its own
Sayer's flavour is milder and its texture drier than the premium varieties it often sits next to in a mixed hamper. On its own it's a fine everyday date, but marketed alone it doesn't command the price a supplier gets by pairing it with two or three Ajwa or Safawi pieces and calling the box "premium assorted." That's not necessarily dishonest — but a buyer who thinks they're getting mostly Ajwa in a mixed carton, when it's mostly Sayer with a few Ajwa on top, is paying for something they didn't actually order.
If a supplier can't tell you the variety breakdown of a mixed box by weight or piece count, that's worth asking about before buying in volume — the answer tells you whether you're dealing with someone who tracks their own stock or someone repackaging whatever's cheapest that week.
What Sayer is good for on its own
Bought as itself rather than hidden in a blend, Sayer works well for everyday snacking and baking, where its firmer bite and lower sweetness are an advantage rather than a downside — it holds its shape better in cooking than a very soft Mazafati would. Suppliers who sell it honestly, by name, at its own price point, are usually easier to build a repeat order with than ones who only offer it folded into something else.
Composition, plainly
Like other date varieties, Sayer carries potassium, magnesium, iron, and natural sugars, at a lower moisture level than Mazafati or Rotab. That's a texture and shelf-life fact, not a health claim — it's food, evaluated the same way any dried fruit would be.
Buying it from a Malaysian supplier
Ask specifically for Sayer by name if that's what you want, rather than a "mixed premium" box where it may or may not be included. For current per-kilo pricing across varieties, see the wholesale price guide, and check the dates suppliers in Malaysia stocking the premium varieties if Sayer's flavour profile isn't what you're after.
